Lost At Windy River
Canadian history has seen many Indigenous narratives co-opted, changed and retold without credit or consent. It was a powerful act for writer Trina Rathgeber and pencil/inker Alina Pete to reclaim this story for Trina’s family, and for Nehiyaw culture overall, and I was so pleased to be able to contribute as a colourist. Something I specifically worked toward was tactility, so readers will see where I tried to bring the essence of a material to the page, whether plaid, wool, leather, skin or bead. The intention I brought to my role was that important things felt tangible and grounded to facilitate connection to the image and the story.
